Welcome to

This is the home of Frank & Sheena Selkirk in Lucainena de las Torres. We bought it during the winter of 2000-2001 and have lived here permanently since 25th May 2007. It is home, garden, farm - and we hope a place where the loving and caring will always be welcome. We have also acquired an apartment on the Valle del Este (Vera) development for the use of family and friends. It is about 30 minutes from the cortijo. Have a look at that, too!

April 2013. Last summer was very dry. There were two storms in early autumn which caused some havoc as the land could not soak up the rush of rain! Since then a comparatively mild winter, but not much further rain. And at the moment no sign of more!

New 70cm or so high troughs have been put in the vegetable garden and the greenhouse, making planting, tending, weeding and picking very much easier. Particularly good have been tomatoes, onions and cauliflower. Letting some lettuce plants go to seed has resulted in almost thousands of self-set lettuces: too many to give away all of them!

We are hoping for further vegetable successes.

The origins

Sorry, we don’t know a great deal. It has been around for at least 200 years. The corn threshing circle (“Era”) attests to it being very active when there was much more rain than there has been in the 20th or 21st century. It was an active and welcoming home, we hear, in the middle of the 20th century. It was not economical to farm commercially from then on, however, so by the end of the century it had become run down. Thus we were able to purchase it at the start of this millennium.
